Reflections on the Black Queens of Durham 3rd Annual Brunch

At the third annual Black Queens of Durham Brunch, our goal was to make every single guest feel like the event was crafted just for them.

Even in a large room full of women, we were intentional about creating opportunities for intimate, meaningful moments. Whether through shared conversations, group photos, or simply enjoying the atmosphere, I wanted every woman to feel like she belonged—unapologetically and fully.

The photo opportunities were everywhere.

From beautiful photo booths to a vibrant patio space and curated tablescapes that practically demanded a photo moment, the event was filled with visual storytelling. These weren’t just pretty setups—they were invitations for connection and joy.

Music was another layer of that experience. The right playlist always hits different. It brings laughter, emotion, and energy—and it speaks to people in ways that words often can’t.

All these elements—intentional design, powerful music, thoughtful curation—came together to create the experience I envisioned. That, for me, is the success of an event.

As an event planner, there’s no better feeling than watching people enjoy something you created with your heart. Seeing the joy, the emotion, the appreciation—it means the vision came to life. And that’s always the priority.

What mattered most to me was that every woman walked away feeling seen, respected, and valued. Every decision—from the layout to the lighting to the content we captured—was made with that in mind.

The content reflects women at all stages of their journey. And the beauty and elegance surrounding them? That’s exactly how I want them to know they are seen.

Honouring the Women Who Make It Happen

I feel so blessed to have collaborated once again with Asha Lapps and Fatim Sylla—two women who are not only leaders, but community builders in the truest sense.

Asha founded The Black Queens of Durham Region with a vision to bring Black women in the region together in meaningful, empowering ways. Fatim joined her early on, and together they’ve grown the group into a thriving online space with over 13,000 members—a place where Black women connect, share resources, and support one another both online and in person.

Working with them is always a grounded, heartfelt experience. They move with purpose and create space with care—and that’s what makes every event we plan together so impactful.

I also want to take a moment to thank my incredible team at RJE.

From the brainstorming stages to the final sweep of the room, your commitment to excellence never goes unnoticed. Every detail, every pivot, every extra hand—thank you. I’m so proud of what we created together.

Tips for Event Planners Looking to Create Meaningful Experiences:

1. Think Intentionally About Space
Even large venues can feel intimate when you create cozy, welcoming areas for connection.

2. Curate More Than Decor
Design with the goal of sparking emotion or memory. Think about how each element contributes to the overall energy.

3. Prioritize Cultural Relevance
When guests see and hear things that reflect who they are, they instantly feel more at home.

4. Share the Process
Don’t be afraid to show the work that happens behind the scenes—it builds trust and community.

5. Plan With Feeling in Mind
Ask yourself: How do I want people to feel when they walk in? And when they leave? Let those answers guide your decisions.

Why Events Like This Matter:

Whether you’re planning your first event or your fiftieth, here’s your reminder: the aesthetics matter, but the atmosphere is what lingers. People remember how you made them feel.

When you create a space where people feel seen, you’re not just putting on an event. Your building legacy.
